OpenAI’s Sora 2 Lets You Star in AI Videos—With Your Own Voice and Sound Effects

OpenAI just launched something that feels pulled straight from a sci-fi movie—and you can try it right from your iPhone.

On Tuesday, OpenAI unveiled Sora 2, its second-gen video synthesis model that not only generates hyper-realistic AI videos but now adds synced sound, speech, and even your own voice and likeness. For the first time, OpenAI users can create videos where they actually appear—with their own real facial expressions, voice, and gestures.

Through a newly launched iOS app (available now in the US and Canada via invite), users can use a feature called “Cameos” to drop themselves into any Sora-generated video. You just gather your face and voice once, and from there, you can star in all sorts of AI-made movies—from fantasy landscapes to sports replays to… ride-on duck races. (Yes, that last one is real.)

The tech reads almost like deepfakes, but OpenAI says it’s built guardrails in. You control who can use your likeness, where it appears, and can delete any content that features you at any time—drafts included.

What Makes Sora 2 Different?

  • 🎬 Synchronized audio and dialogue, including sound effects and ambient soundscapes
  • 🧠 More accurate scene composition across multiple shots
  • 🌍 More believable physics, like realistic basketball rebounds or Olympic gymnastics routines
  • 📱 A fully featured social experience packed into an iOS app designed for casual content creators

This is also the first time OpenAI has paired its video model with a social feed. Users can create videos, remix others’ content, and explore a personalized feed—all inside the app.

The New Social App: Create, Don’t Scroll

OpenAI’s shift into social territory is deliberate—and different. The app doesn’t push endless scrolling or addictive engagement tricks. Instead, it puts the focus on making stuff.

OpenAI says it’s rolled out a new type of recommendation algorithm, where you can actually guide what you see using everyday language prompts. Think: “Show me videos set in space” or “Only feature clips under 30 seconds.”

Access and Limitations

Right now, the app is live in the U.S. and Canada but requires an invite. You’ll get a free tier with “generous” usage limits. When demand outpaces computing capacity, OpenAI plans to introduce paid options.

Sora 2 is also being added to ChatGPT for Pro users and is expected to arrive as an API soon. The previous version, Sora 1 Turbo, is still available, and all your old videos stay put in your Sora library.

Safety in a World of Deepfakes

Of course, the potential for misuse looms large. Deepfake scandals involving impersonated teens and non-consensual imagery have sparked legal battles and tragedy in real life.

OpenAI says it’s taking these risks seriously. The new app includes:

  • Daily creation limits for teen users
  • Strict permissions on Cameo use
  • Automated safety checks and human moderation
  • Tools for users to monitor, revoke, or delete any instance of their cameo

OpenAI also stated that they’re not trying to make another doomscroll factory. Their focus is on responsible content creation, not passive feed consumption.

Big Vision, Small Steps

Sora 2 isn’t perfect. OpenAI admits it still “makes plenty of mistakes.” But the release marks what the company calls its “GPT-3.5 moment for video”—a leap in realism, complexity, and accessibility on the road toward simulating how the world works.

So while the physics aren’t truly understood (it’s mostly really good pattern matching), the results are increasingly convincing.

Whether that’s exciting, unsettling, or a bit of both—it’s happening. And now, you can star in the story.
