Led by Point72, the new funding boosts Heidi’s mission to double global healthcare capacity by putting AI in doctors’ hands—starting with taking their notes

A few years ago, Dr. Tom Kelly, a trauma surgeon, noticed something painfully ordinary everywhere he looked: doctors buried under piles of admin work. Paperwork, transcribing notes, scheduling follow-ups — it was relentless. And it was stealing time from what actually mattered: treating patients.
So he did something about it.
He co-founded Heidi Health in 2021 alongside Waleed Mussa — a partnership that came out of their past life in startups. Their goal? Build an AI care partner that could offload the soul-sucking admin tasks doctors deal with every day.
Now, less than three years later, Heidi Health just raised $65 million in Series B funding. The round was led by Steve Cohen’s Point72, with participation from Goodwater Capital, Headline, Blackbird VC, LG Technology Ventures, and Alumni Ventures. In total, the health tech startup has now pulled in $96.6 million.
So, why all the excitement?
Heidi’s AI quietly returned 18 million hours to doctors

That’s not a typo. Since early 2024, Heidi’s AI tools have helped frontline healthcare providers reclaim over 18 million hours across more than 70 million patient visits in 116 countries. That’s time doctors used to spend on the computer instead of with patients.
Here’s what Heidi actually does:
- Acts as a real-time medical scribe that transcribes and writes up patient notes
- Generates personalized summaries for each patient visit
- Tracks tasks so doctors don’t need to rely on sticky notes or memory
And the tool’s built smartly. Heidi created its own AI model but also layers on top of others, like Google’s Gemini. This hybrid setup gives them better control over accuracy, speed, and cost — a big deal when precision matters.
A new AI feature: calling patients on behalf of doctors

At the same time as the funding news, Heidi also introduced a fresh feature: an AI agent that can call patients for you.
Need to follow up on lab results? Check in after a procedure? This AI voice agent makes the call. It’s not meant to replace human connection, but it frees doctors up for the more meaningful conversations.
Dr. Simon Kos, the former Chief Medical Officer at Microsoft, just joined the team to help guide this push forward. Also coming onboard is Paul Williamson, who used to head revenue at Plaid.
Why Point72 is betting big on Heidi
Dr. Kelly said the folks at Point72 had already seen plenty of medical scribes come and go. But they were impressed by just how widely used Heidi had become and how deeply providers were engaging with the product.
Most AI health tools are sold top-down — sold to administrators or hospital execs. Heidi’s getting traction bottom-up, by winning over the doctors themselves. There’s even a free version of the tool, with paid upgrades — a model that’s helping them hook independent practices, too.
“They loved that we were obsessed about the end user experience,” Dr. Kelly explained.
The bigger vision: Expanding clinical capacity anywhere in the world

While many discussions about healthcare AI focus on tech-heavy hospitals in developed countries, Dr. Kelly wants to take Heidi everywhere.
“Imagine a world where a healthcare provider can practice in a war zone, a refugee camp, or an underserved rural community,” he said. “Heidi can help them reach more patients and deliver better health care results.”
That’s the kind of perspective you get from a trauma surgeon. It’s not just about cutting costs or boosting efficiency — it’s about extending human care using the right tools.
What’s next?
The fresh funding will go toward improving the product and broadening reach. Heidi Health currently supports over 2 million clinicians each week and isn’t showing signs of slowing down.
Dr. Kelly believes AI can double the world’s healthcare capacity. Not by replacing humans. But by helping them do their work with less stress, fewer admin tasks, and more time to care.
“It’s about maintaining trust, not removing humanity,” he said. “We want to bring that world about.”
