A Sneaky Flaw in Google’s Gemini CLI Let Hackers Run Hidden Commands — Experts Found It In Just 48 Hours

It started as a flashy new AI tool meant to help developers write code from their terminal. But within two days of its launch, researchers uncovered a serious security flaw that could’ve given hackers full access to your machine — all with just a few cleverly planted sentences.

Let’s break down what happened.

What’s Gemini CLI, Anyway?

Gemini CLI is Google’s open-source AI coding assistant that runs directly in your terminal. Think of it like ChatGPT, but it works right in your command line, helping you draft, modify, and troubleshoot code. It’s free, connected to Google’s powerful Gemini 2.5 Pro model, and feels like coding with a helpful robot sidekick — one that knows what “vibe coding” means.

But like any new tool, especially one that executes commands on your system, it opens the door to potential risks.

The Flaw: A Silent Backdoor in Plain Sight

On June 25, the same day Gemini CLI officially launched, the security team at a company called Tracebit started poking around. By June 27 — less than 48 hours later — they found a way to exploit it.

Sam Cox, Tracebit’s founder and CTO, built a proof-of-concept attack that looked like any other open-source code package. Just a basic-looking one with your typical README file. But tucked into that README were a few innocent-looking lines of text.

And that’s where things went wrong.

The Hidden Danger: Prompt Injection

The researchers used a trick called a prompt injection. In simple terms: they wrote sentences that tricked the AI into doing something harmful — like running commands it wasn’t supposed to.

What’s wild is the actual code in the package was totally clean. The danger lived entirely in the README.md file — the thing we all skim past when installing a new package.

Gemini CLI, however, faithfully read the full file. And thanks to some vulnerabilities around how Gemini handled commands and UI feedback, it obeyed. No alert. No warning.

Just silent execution.

Here’s What the Attack Did

The prompt tricked Gemini CLI into running three commands:

  1. A harmless-looking grep command (something any dev might approve to avoid having to click “yes” repeatedly)
  2. Then env, which grabs environmental variables — often full of sensitive system info and credentials
  3. Then curl, which shipped all that data off to a remote, attacker-controlled server

To make this even more invisible, Cox added a ton of white space, hiding the malicious part of the command way down the line — totally out of view in the status output.

In the worst-case scenario? This sort of hack could have deleted all your files (rm -rf /), bombed your CPU with a forkbomb, or opened the door to install a remote shell.

As Cox put it plainly: “The same technique would work for deleting files […] or even installing a remote shell giving the attacker remote control of the user’s machine.”

The Fix: Fast Action From Google

Thankfully, this all stayed in the lab.

Once the vulnerability was discovered, Google rolled out a fix within a week. It was marked as Priority 1 and Severity 1 — their way of saying: “Yeah, this is bad, and we need to handle it now.”

The patched version, Gemini CLI 0.1.14, is now live. If you’re using the tool, make sure you’ve updated.

What Made This Possible?

Researchers found that three issues combined to break Gemini’s safeguards:

  • Poor validation of allowed commands
  • A misleading user interface that didn’t show what was really being executed
  • The fundamental fragility of large language models — like Gemini Pro — when they’re tricked into interpreting natural language as commands

This specific scheme also used indirect prompt injection. That means the bad prompt didn’t come directly from a user — it was buried inside a text file that the model just happened to be reading.

And AI models love to please. They followed orders, even when those orders were subtle and buried.

How to Stay Safe Moving Forward

Here’s what you can do now:

  • Upgrade Gemini CLI to v0.1.14 or later
  • Don’t add commands to the allow list unless they’re absolutely safe
  • Be cautious with any untrusted codebase — especially if it includes README files or other documentation
  • Run unknown packages in a sandboxed environment (not the default setting)

Tracebit tested the same trick against other coding AIs like Claude and Codex. Neither fell for it, thanks to stronger allow-list protections.

But as AI becomes more embedded in software development, this shows how vulnerable these tools can be — not through brute force, but through their eagerness to help.

Bottom Line

Gemini CLI is a promising step toward smarter developer tools.

But even helpful AI can be hijacked with the right prompt buried in a README. It only took 48 hours for researchers to find that out.
